Terms of use

1. What these terms cover

These terms apply to the WebDLNA website and documentation published by StreamLink, and to your use of the WebDLNA software. Your licence to copy, modify and distribute the software is granted separately by the GNU AGPL v3.0 and summarised on the licence terms page. Where these terms and that licence differ on your rights in the software, the licence prevails.

In these terms, "StreamLink", "we" and "us" mean Rhys Jones trading as StreamLink, the author and publisher of WebDLNA. "You" means the person reading this or running the software.

2. WebDLNA is self-hosted

We do not operate a service. WebDLNA runs on hardware you control, reads from media servers you control, and stores its data in your own browser. There is no account, no server of ours in the path, and no administrator who can help you recover anything.

This has consequences worth stating plainly:

• Availability is yours to manage. If your machine sleeps, your network drops or your browser clears its storage, that is not an outage we can fix.
• Backups are yours to keep. Favourites, playlists, history, statistics and offline downloads live in browser storage, which the browser may clear or evict at any time. Export what you would miss, and never treat an offline download as your only copy of a file.
• Security is yours to configure. The defaults suit a trusted home network. Exposing it more widely, with a port forward or a public host, is your decision and your risk. See the security section of the docs.

3. Your media and your rights to it

WebDLNA finds, plays, converts and downloads media that is already on your network. It distributes no media itself, and installing it confers no right to any film, recording, broadcast or other work.

You are responsible for ensuring that you are entitled to do what you do, in particular:

• That you own, have licensed, or are otherwise permitted to access the material you stream, transcode, download or cast.
• That doing so is lawful where you are, including under copyright law and any terms attached to the material or the service it came from.
• That you have permission to access the servers and networks you point the software at.

Transcoding and offline downloading make copies of a file. That those features exist is not advice that making such copies is lawful in your circumstances.

4. Acceptable use

You must not use WebDLNA, or this website, to:

• infringe copyright or any other right of a third party;
• access systems or networks you are not authorised to access;
• redistribute media to the public, or operate a public streaming service, without the rights to do so;
• break any applicable law, or facilitate someone else doing so.

Because we operate nothing, we cannot suspend your use of the software. The practical consequence of misuse is legal, not technical, and it falls on you.

5. Third-party software and services

WebDLNA works with components we do not control, and your use of them is governed by their terms, not ours:

• ffmpeg, if you install it, performs transcoding.
• Google's Cast SDK is loaded from Google's servers when the app runs, and casting sends media addresses to your Chromecast. See our privacy policy.
• Your DLNA/UPnP media servers, whoever makes them.
• Open-source libraries bundled into the app, each under its own licence.

Links from this site to other sites are provided for convenience. We do not endorse them and are not responsible for their content.

6. No warranty

The website, the documentation and the software are provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law we exclude all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, uninterrupted or error-free operation, and the accuracy or completeness of the documentation.

Media playback in particular depends on your files, codecs, browser, hardware, servers and network, none of which we control. Nothing here promises that a given file will play, that a transcode will succeed, or that a device will be found.

7. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, StreamLink is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, nor for loss of data, loss of media, loss of profit or business interruption, arising out of your use of, or inability to use, the website or the software, even if the possibility was known.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us for the software, which for WebDLNA is nothing.

Australian Consumer Law. If you are a consumer as defined by the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), you have guarantees that cannot be excluded. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies those rights. Where a guarantee applies and our liability may lawfully be limited, it is limited to re-supplying the relevant goods or services, or paying the cost of doing so.

8. Changes

We may update these terms as the software changes. The date at the top marks the current version, and continuing to use the site or the software after a change means you accept it. Older releases of the software remain licensed under the terms they shipped with.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Australia. You and StreamLink submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Australia, without prejudice to any right you have to bring proceedings where you live.

If any provision is found unenforceable, it is severed and the rest continues to apply.
